Putting petrol in diesel car is generally considered a more serious and potentially damaging mistake than putting diesel in petrol car. Here's why, what happens, and what to do:
Why Is Bad Petrol In Diesel Car
Diesel engines rely on the specific properties of diesel fuel for their operation:
Lubrication: Diesel fuel is oily and acts as a lubricant for the precision-engineered components of the fuel system, especially the fuel pump and injectors. These components operate at very high pressures and tolerances. Petrol, on the other hand, is a solvent and has very poor lubricating properties.
Ignition: Diesel engines use high compression to heat the air in the cylinders, causing the diesel fuel to ignite without a spark plug (compression ignition). Petrol has a much lower flash point and is designed to ignite with a spark.
Viscosity: Petrol is much thinner than diesel.
What Happens if You Put Petrol in Diesel Car:
The severity of the damage depends on how much petrol was added and whether the engine was started.
If the engine is not started:
This is the best-case scenario. The petrol will be sitting in the fuel tank, mixing with any remaining diesel.
The primary risk is that if you turn the ignition on, the fuel pump will start to prime, circulating the contaminated fuel through the system.
If the engine is started (even briefly):
Loss of Lubrication: The most critical issue. Petrol acts as a solvent, stripping away the lubricating film that diesel provides. This leads to increased friction and rapid wear on the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors.
Metal-on-Metal Contact: The lack of lubrication can cause metal components within the fuel pump to rub against each other, generating metal shavings.
Contamination of the Fuel System: These metal shavings can then be distributed throughout the entire fuel system, including the fuel lines, fuel rail, and injectors. This causes further damage and blockages.
Engine Misfires and Rough Running: Petrol ignites too easily and at the wrong time in a diesel engine's high-compression environment, leading to uncontrolled combustion, knocking sounds, and rough running.
Loss of Power and Stalling: The engine will struggle to run efficiently, lose power, and likely stall.
Smoke: You'll typically see excessive smoke from the exhaust, often white or bluish.
Serious Component Damage: Prolonged running, even for a short distance, can lead to:
Damaged high-pressure fuel pump: Often the first and most expensive component to fail.
Damaged fuel injectors: Can be clogged, damaged by metal particles, or suffer from seal failure due to petrol's solvent properties.
Clogged fuel filters: Will quickly become blocked with debris.
Damage to the common rail system: Modern diesel cars have very complex and sensitive common rail fuel systems.
Catalytic converter damage: Unburnt fuel can damage the emissions system.
Potentially irreparable engine damage: In severe cases, the damage can be so extensive that a full engine replacement is necessary, which is extremely costly.
What to Do Immediately (DO NOT START THE ENGINE!):
If you realize you've put petrol in diesel car, the most important thing is to DO NOT START THE ENGINE. If you have already started it, turn it off immediately as soon as it's safe to do so.
Do NOT Start the Engine: This is the most crucial step to minimize damage. The longer the engine runs on the wrong fuel, the more severe the consequences will be.
Do NOT Turn on the Ignition: Even turning the ignition on (without starting the engine) can activate the fuel pump and circulate the petrol in diesel car.
Costs:
The cost of a professional wrong fuel drain service if petrol in diesel car can vary but typically ranges from £150 to £300+ if caught quickly and before the engine is started. If the engine was run and components are damaged, the cost can easily run into hundreds or even thousands of pounds for repairs and replacements.
